BATTLETECH: Land-Air-Mechs Are Lame
A video I'm glad to finally be done with, this will be the only piece on this subject I intend to create. The #LAM is a left-over from an earlier time in the history of #Battletech, harkoning back to the days of #Macross / #Robotech.
Well, I'm going to go over why I personally can't stand them, won't play against them, and think they're generally bad for the setting. The #Ubanmech #LAM is hopefully not a harbringer of a return for these cursed pieces, because frankly, it'd greatly diminish my interest in the setting.
Sometimes, things are better off just being left in the wastebin of history.
Reminder, this is a pure opinion piece in this instance. I like to think I make that clear in the vi...

    I recall in one of the games that allowed heavy customization: ditch the AC10 for an ultra AC5, add a ton of LRM ammo, swap the ER LL and machine guns for a torso mounted PPC = you have a bushwacker that is a long range support platform that pairs nicely with a typical LRM-boat like a catapult. Made for an excellent AI-ally mech. Behind you, up on the hill, taking potshots from safety while you were in the shit. PPC and UAC5 ranged as far as the LRMs, its still hard to hit and agile.

    I have some appreciation to the old-school approach to game balance which basically boils down to "huh, what's that?" I think games with choices with obvious or sometimes less-obvious strengths and flaws can give the world a degree of verisimilitude which can add a lot to a game that has heavy role-playing elements. LAMs I think are an artifact of this era of game development, and are also one of those things that was so obviously broken they forced developers to actually start paying attention to balance, because there's fun imbalance that can be more-or-less solved with systems like Battle Value, or by having a Game Master who uses flawed units as OPFOR to give the PCs a sneaky leg up, but then there's un-fun imbalance like flying mechs that game the game last 20 turns with little interaction because they skew the rolls of the game so hard and offer such little opportunity for counter-play, and LAMs fall into that second category.

    Since this video's release a few new variants have been released. The GTD-30S is even more battlemastery, and pretty cheap for what it does. And the GTD-20C is a horror show. Ferrolam and upgrades all its weapons to clanspec. And on top of that it's actually not that expensive for a mech that hits as hard and is as tough as it is.

    The easy way to rectify these seeming continuity errors is to recognize that the stats in the TROs are not for the mechs as they existed during the star league, it is a representation of how those chassis performed after the typical wear and tear, refits, replacement of damaged equipment, and jury-rigging for hundreds of years of Succession wars. You kind of have to accept that a lot of the game stats are simplifications. "AC/20" is used to represent dozens of different models of cannon, that all have technically slightly different performance "in real world". And a cannon that started out in the Star League performing as an "Ultra AC/20" might only perform as an "AC/20" after hundreds of years of use and lack of proper replacement parts, despite being the same model of cannon.

    • @BigRed40TECH
      @BigRed40TECH 8 часов назад

      Unfortunately, they've done themselves the disservice of specifically listing certain variants in the past, the far past. It's just what it is.

    • @bronco5334
      @bronco5334 6 часов назад

      @@BigRed40TECH You are not reading and understanding. The same variant, with the same equipment, will not perform the same when hundreds of years old and running on bodged-together parts, as it will when new. The in-game stats are just a contrivance to best represent the unit, and aggregate together equipment that is generally similar in overall performance, but not the same as in actuality; for example, an autocannon that fires a single 200mm shot might be represented as an AC/10, while another autocannon that fires a burst of 50mm at 900 round per minute might *also* be represented in-game as an AC/10. So the same Crab, with new guns, can be effectively twin UAC/20 when new from the factory, but over time the guns wear out, fire less rapidly and with lower velocity, and are then represented in-game as basic AC/20. Despite being the same mech. But as far as I'm concerned, Battletech never really gives us the stats for a brand-new KGC-000 straight out of a Star League factory. They give us the stats for a KGC-000 that has been battered and worn out over two hundred years. The fluff text just says that the Dalban Hi-rez B targeting system was state of the art with "every piece of new technology", and that the mech carried two "Deathgiver AC/20". It never states what the effective range of those guns were, nor the caliber they fire, or the rate of fire, or anything of the sort. You're reading the stat sheets way too literally, and assuming that there is no abstraction taking place between the "real" performance of the unit, versus the exact numbers used in the game. I think that assuming that Deathgivers originally fired fast enough to count as ultra 20s when new is pretty reasonable, considering that gauss rifles were *extinct* up until the 3040s; this means star-league relic UAC/20s degraded to AC/20 performance, while star league relic gauss rifles simply wore out so badly they couldn't be used at all. Which would put the Pillager matter into some context: the Pillager went extinct. They started making NEW pillagers after the rediscovery of the Helm memory core technologies. TRO 3058 doesn't give stats for old, worn-out Pillagers, it gives stats for new-production ones which are "re-introduced" in 3058 after previously being extinct. By the same token, the new-production King Crabs carried twin gauss rifles, or LB/20X; and an explicitly known Star-League era variant uses 2x LB/10X and 2x PPC. And there is a discrepancy where it is also claimed that the original King Crab used "Imperator-D" instead of "Deathgiver" autocannon. So there's a lot of room for assuming that the original Star League-era performance specs are not the same as what is represented in TRO 2750

    I feel like if they are going to bring them back, that they need to get rid of the airmech part of the transformation. Create some narrative reason, it just doesn't work, too expensive, something like that. If they're forced to either be an aerospace fighter or a mech, it still retains some of the novelty of being a high-mobility mech asset, but loses the mobility that makes them so frustrating. That's if they are going to come back, get rid of the airmech, and you have some of the anime protagonist novelty if someone wants that.

    First up, NO. I dislike LAM's, but Lame? Strikecraft that transform into giant stompy robots will NEVER be lame as a concept. Ineffective? Probably the case here. Out of place? Absolutely. Obscuring the glory of ASF and the merits of combined arms? I feel so. But lame? NO Transformers was actually part of the drama with HG via licensing of Macross toys and designs. Literally the first Jetfire toy. Honestly, depending on the context, I'd argue the rigid mechanical stiffness might have become overemphasized, but the LAM transformations do certainly feel implausible for Battletech. I care about the Urbie LAM because it's a joke at customers' expense. No LAM models would be more respectful to the players who love them than a joke model. And, if I may speculate based on limited information, given teh comparative lack of anything I've heard of about Macross, those robotech/Macross fans may still be coming to battletech because their content wells are dry, forcing substitution, especially for those outside Japan. For me, they don't take away from mechs, they take away from Aerospace Fighters. The high flying strike craft which ironically help ground the setting to make it distinct from things like Macross and Gundam. Mechs aren't the Be All End All in Battletech. They're powerful to be sure, but they aren't for every problem, and especially not for every budget. They can't do everything better than conventional designs, and there are some conventional designs whose roles battlemechs just flat out CAN'T do. Which is what REALLY sets Battletech apart from other mech/giant robot centric franchises. But this only shows when combined arms comes into play, and there's less likely to be interest in having more conventional air support when your mech can fly. Best I could suggest for weakness for Air Mech mode would be that weapon platforms with the AA quirk get a much bigger bonus to hit than against normal aircraft or LAM's in pure air mode. And maybe an increased accuracy penalty for moving in air mech mode. If they every come back in force.

    From a logistics standpoint, LAMs are the only mechs you need. An Overlord can deliver 42 fighters that become helicopters or mechs as needed to complete a mission. Union? 14. Leopard? 6. You are now dealing with modern warfare cranked to 11, only the carrier needs to sortie only Harriers that are also tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

    Question i should've asked in my last post. Simply because the 'idea' of these craft or similarly made ones(like a mech that can go from walking to moving on wheels) are appealing to from what i understand, though could be wrong. lesser states that are less well equipped. where a mech like this that can do multiple roles, all be it worse than dedicated single role mechs. simply because said mech would appear cheaper than fielding two or three mechs or military hardware units to do the same task. I'm just a bit curious is all. If asked, by say those in charge of the rules. What would you change rule wise. With complete removal not being an option. That you would find them 'acceptable' to have, but still allowing your refusal to use or play with anyone who has them ala savannah master horde? Having the mech's transformation stop being a free action?(should be a given though i may have misunderstood your explanation of the rules) as in you the player spends a turn on those mechs to changer from one form to the next, no skipping from mech to plane in a single turn? So to go from mech to plane, you have to spend a turn to get to the half point. then another turn to the plane? Putting them in a sub-light armor class all their own making a pidgeon laser effective? Have their extreme movement speed be a risk/reward by greatly upping the amount of heat the mech generates in moving under half and full plane mode? So that using a full range would cause a full overheat? intact strict weight requirements? i mean it's supposed to fly right? can't be carting around similar amounts of arms and armor to a light mech? double or triple the piloting skill rolls and reqs? after all it's 2-3 in one, right?

    They will probably have the hells horses do something similar to the quadvees....a WIGI mech like that protomech ( I forgot it's name).....and likewise...a half LAM.....a fighter that converts to airmech mode only. They would say "Hells Horses have moved past Mongol doctrine and have evolved into Blitzkrieg warfare to strike at those They deem unworthy CLAN WOLF!" 😂
